Charles Perin Friday 18th june at 14h00 Place: ENAC - Amphi Boucher Title: Augmenting Physical Activities with Situated First-Person Visualizations Abstract: Digital technologies that provide people with real-time information while they perform physical activities have become a billion-dollar industry. However, current technologies are largely limited to displaying text on devices such as smartwatches. Checking and interacting with data on such devices while exercising is cumbersome: people often need to press buttons, perform gestures, or raise their watch or phone to access information. This interrupts natural motion, breaks the flow of the activity, and can be hazardous, as it diverts attention away from the environment and toward the display. In this talk, I will focus on a favorite activity of mine — running — to discuss a range of visualization and HCI research opportunities for designing technologies that provide in-situ, unobtrusive, fast, and safe access to data during physical activities. Bio: Charles Perin is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at the University of Victoria, where he co-leads the Victoria Interactive eXperiences with Information (VIXI) research group, specializing in Human-Computer Interaction and Information Visualization: https://vixi.cs.uvic.ca/. He also holds an Inria International Research Chair at Inria Bordeaux, in the Bivwac team. He and his students are interested in designing and studying new interactions for visualizations, understanding how people use and interact with visualizations in their everyday lives, and exploring visualization beyond the desktop, including mobile and physical visualization. Before joining the University of Victoria in 2018, Charles was a Lecturer at City, University of London. Prior to that, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Calgary, a PhD student at Université Paris-Sud/Inria, and, long before that, a kid in Brittany, France.
